It's the politicians, stupid!

Naomi Klein’s “The Shock Doctrine” is perhaps too eager to pin blame for outrageous capitalism and our economic ills on Milton Friedman and the “Chicago Boys”. But it’s the politicians, stupid.
Friedman’s monetarism and other economic philosophies would be nothing if the politicians had not embraced them and imposed them on us all. It was Friedman’s hold on people in power that made it such a toxic philosophy.
A TV documentary version of “The Shock Doctrine” was broadcast last week, and very powerful it was, too. But it becomes clear that she has overstated her case.
Even so, Klein’s assertion that “Iraq is the most privatised war in history”, should ring in our ears every time we hope for an end to the war. Where money’s to be made, where’s the incentive to stop? Our taxes are poured into defence budgets which pour out again into the pockets of war profiteers. If you cut out the middle-man (ie government) the transfer of wealth from us to them makes the transfer of our tax money to bankers look like monkey-nuts.
